OCWK Double at South of England Champs
21 January 2008

‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes won two gold and a silver medal at the South of England AA Indoor Championships at Lee Valley Athletics Centre on 19-20 January.

In the senior women’s 400m Tara Bird (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) came through in the final few strides for an excellent victory over GB 400m international Melanie Purkiss by two hundredths of a second. Her time of 55.57 was a new indoor personal best and a championship best performance. Tara had comfortably won her heat and semi-final earlier in the day in 56.58 and 56.31 respectively.

There was an OCWK one-two in the senior women’s 800m. 17-year-old Rachel Stringer (City of Norwich) took the title in big indoor personal best of 2:08.84 ahead of Carolyn Plateau (Radley AC) who clocked 2:09.17.

At the North of England Championships Stephanie Roe (Preston Harriers) took the Bronze medal in the Under 20 1500m.

Other OCWK athletes have been in action over the country in recent weeks. Emma Pallant (Aldershot Farnham & District) competed for England in the Cross Country International in Elgóibar, Spain on Sunday 13 January. She finished third in the 4.4km junior women’s race in a time of 16:28, behind winner Cristina Jordan of Spain (16:06) and team mate Beth Carter (16:18).

Jess Coulson (Stockport Harriers) meanwhile has been testing herself against international senior opposition. In the IAAF Permit CrossCup race in Brussels on 23 December she finished 20th over the 6km course in 21:00. She lined up again in the senior women’s race at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country on Saturday 12 January where she finished 26th, completing the 6.7km course in 22:04.

There were three OCWK winners at the County Cross Country Championships on 6 January. Hannah Brooks (Crawley AC) won the Under 20 race at the Surrey Championships, running over a minute quicker over the same course as she had in 2007. Emma Pallant (Aldershot Farnham & District) won the Under 20 race in Hampshire by nearly a minute and Jordan Kinney (Royal Sutton Coldfield) was the first Under 20 home in Warwickshire. Kerrie Harris (Hull Achilles) took the Under 17 title at the Humberside Championships.
