Double Gold for OCWK athletes at BUSA Champs
5 May 2008

There was an ‘On Camp with Kelly’ clean sweep of the medals in the women’s 1500m at the British Universities Athletics Championships at Bedford International Stadium on 3-5 May as well as gold in the women’s 800m and silver and bronze in the men’s 800m.

Emma Pallant, representing Brunel University, took gold in the 1500m in a time of 4:20.88, just ahead of Linzi Snow (St Mary’s) who clocked 4:21.05 and Emma Jackson (Keele) in 4:21.19. After a slow first lap OCWK athlete Charlotte Roach (Cambridge) went to the front before Jess Sparke (St Mary’s) made a move with about 600 metres to go. Emma P then made her bid for victory, going into the lead with around 500 metres remaining and holding off the challenge of 800m specialist Emma J and the fast finishing Linzi down the home straight.

A total of six OCWK athletes competed in the 1500m final with Hannah Brooks (Birmingham) finishing sixth in 4:24.45, Charlotte Roach eighth in 4:26.09 and Dani Christmas (Loughborough) tenth in 4:33.01.

There was another win for Brunel in the women’s 800m, with Tara Bird leading from gun to tape to take the title in 2:06.99, just one tenth of a second outside her personal best and 1.5 seconds ahead of Birmingham’s Hayley Beard in second place. She also ran a 53.8 final leg in the 4×400m to anchor Brunel to victory.

In the men’s 800m two of the male athletes who took part in the recent OCWK Educational Camp in Loughborough, Ed Aston and Chris Smith, both representing Birmingham University, won silver and bronze medals. Ed clocked 1:50.58 and Chris 1:50.72, taking two seconds off his personal best. The race was won in a sprint finish by Loughborough’s Kieran Flannery in 1:50.45.

A number of other OCWK athletes have shown good early season form:

Three OCWK Athletes set personal bests over 1500m at the BMC Millfield PB Classic in Street on 5 May. Louise Small (Aldershot, Farnham & District) took nearly half a second off her best with 4:24.72 in second place, Jess Burns (City of Plymouth) took three and a half seconds off her best with 4:24.89 in third and Katie Knowles (Bristol & West) improved by one and a half seconds to 4:28.14 in sixth place. The race was won by Joanne Harvey in 4:24.14.

Hannah England (Oxford City AC) has followed her NCAA Indoor Mile title with wins in her first outdoor races of the season. She set a new personal best of 2:03.65 to win the 800m at the ACC Championships in Atlanta on 17-19 April, taking three tenths of a second of the time she set last year. She followed that with another win at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on 26 April, this time in the mile with a time of 4:40.22.

Leigh Lennon (Newham & Essex Beagles) won the 800m in a new personal best of 2:09.77, taking two tenths of a second off the time she set at the UK School Games last year, at a representative match for the Northern Counties in Malta on 26 April.

Rachel Stringer (City of Norwich) improved her 400m personal best by nearly a second to 56.6 to win at a National Junior League match at Ipswich on 27 April.

Laura Weightman (Morpeth Harriers) took nearly three seconds off the 1500m best that she set when taking the gold at last year’s UK School Games with a win in 4:23.4 at a North East Counties League match in Jarrow on Wednesday 30 April.
