National School Sport Week

30th June – 4th July

Click here for Dame Kelly’s live diary updates! She is uploading live updates after each school visit during the whole of the National School Sport Week.

A year ago when Gordon Brown became Prime Minister, Dame Kelly visited him to discuss her role as The National School Sport Champion and spoke to him about the steps she wished to take in her campaign to inspire children around the country to get active and engage in a wide range of Sport. She suggested the idea of a National School Sport Week as a yearly event to celebrate school sport around the country.

The National School Sport Week was born, a government initiative managed by the Youth Sport Trust with the support of Norwich Union. In February this year Dame Kelly joined PM Gordon Brown in launching the event at the Youth Sport Trust’s Sports Colleges Conference.

The week-long celebration of school sport and PE aims to engage over 3 million school children – the largest number of children taking part in PE or school sport at anyone time.

Schools within school partnerships are now offering an average of 17 different sports each, and The National School Sport Week organisers have encouraged schools to develop their own unique plans for the week. Activities range from multi-sport taster sessions and street dance performances, to more traditional rounders, cricket and athletics.

Schools have been set the task of coming up with the most innovative activity during the week. Dame Kelly will be flying on the ‘Kellycopter’ to visit schools around the country:

Monday
Schools in the South East to see how more teenage girls are being encouraged to take part in PE and sport.

Tuesday
Schools in the North East and East Midlands to see how more young people are being encouraged to become sports leaders and volunteers.

Wednesday
Schools in the South West and West Midlands to see how more young people are being encouraged to take part in competitive sport.

Thursday
Schools in and around the London area to celebrate young people’s talent in sport and to demonstrate how the 5-hr offer of PE and school sport can be achieved.

Friday
Schools in the North West and Yorkshire to see how more young disabled people are being offered the opportunity to take part in PE and sport.

Watch out for Dame Kelly’s NSSC diary starting Monday! She will be posting a day by day report of her school visits all week long.

NSSW competition
During the week, Norwich Union will also be announcing the search for their ‘NSSW Unsung Hero’. This may be a teacher, parent or child who has purposefully demonstrated their commitment to school sport, either during NSSW or consistently through the school year. The prize is a VIP day out for 4 at the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on Saturday 26th July.
