East Anglia pupils wow Dame Kelly
17Th July 2007
Belly dancing, climbing, volleyball, judo and fencing were just some of the sporting activities on show for National School Sport Champion Dame Kelly Holmes today (Tuesday), at schools across East Anglia.
During visits to three schools, in Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich, Dame Kelly met hundreds of young people, inspiring and motivating them to increase the amount of sport they do in schools. As well as seeing sporting demonstrations at each school, Dame Kelly spoke at assemblies and took part in question and answers sessions at the schools. Giving pupils an insight into how sport has transformed her life, she challenged them to get even more involved and active.
The visits follow Friday’s announcement by Prime Minster Gordon Brown of a £100m campaign to give every child the chance of doing five hours of sport every week,
The Government’s additional funding supports plans to create a world-class PE and school sport system in the run-up to and beyond London 2012. As the National School Sport Champion, a role managed by the Youth Sport Trust and supported by Norwich Union, Dame Kelly is seeing how schools in East Anglia are helping to deliver on this ambition.
In a mammoth tour of the region Dame Kelly visited Thurstable School and Sports College in Colchester, taking part in the school’s multi-cultural day. Pupils tried out sports from around the world, including a capture the flag game and belly dancing.
At Westbourne High School and Sports College in Ipswich, Dame Kelly saw young people taking part in judo, fencing, basketball, kiting, high 5 netball and trampolining.
To round off the day, Dame Kelly was official starter for Angel Road Middle School’s relay race tournament, the finale to an activity day at the school in Norwich.
Tomorrow Dame Kelly will be visiting a further three schools in East Anglia and seeing first hand what schools in the area are doing to increase the provision of sport to pupils.
National School Sport Champion, Dame Kelly Holmes said: “It’s been a fabulous day and great to see what these schools are doing with sport. I want to inspire pupils of all abilities to be the best they can be, whether that’s as volunteers, young leaders or participants. With the Government’s increased support for competitive sport it’s a great time to meet young people. I want to see real change and for more children to take part in more activities. We need to be a sporting nation and for that to happen we have to inspire, motivate, encourage and capture the imagination of all our young people so that sport becomes a part of their day-to-day lives.”
