Press release
Double Olympic gold medallist, Dame Kelly Holmes is set to inspire young people across Norfolk to do more PE and school sport when she visits pupils in the area on Monday 19 May.
In her role as the National School Sport Champion, a Government-backed role managed by the Youth Sport Trust and supported by Norwich Union, Dame Kelly has taken on the challenge of helping the Government give every child the chance of five hours of sport every week.
Kelly is set to visit Earlham High School who will act as host for her visit to the schools which make up the Norwich School sport Partnership. Pupils from schools across the partnership will come together for the chance to meet Kelly and demonstrate some of the activities on offer during their PE sessions.
Gary Penn, Norwich Schools Sport Partnership’s Partnership Development Manager says: “Dame Kelly visit to the network of primary and secondary schools which make up the Norwich School Sport Partnership is fantastic reward for the hard work that is being put in by staff and pupils across the region to get everyone active.
Since Kelly does a lot of work around getting girls active we hope she will enjoy seeing some of the more unusual activities such as boxing and Wii-inspired circuit training on offer to the girls!”
The second leg of her visit will take Kelly to King Edward VII School – a specialist sports college and the hub site of the School Sport Partnership – to celebrate the sporting achievements of pupils from across the partnership. Kelly will begin the visit with the opportunity to see for herself a range of sporting activities on offer to pupils being showcased at the school including tennis, a mini Olympics and a Primary school Festival.
As part of the visit, Kelly will be the special guest at a special presentation evening, where she will be on hand to congratulate pupils on their accomplishments and the hard work and dedication they have put in over the year.
As part of the celebration, pupils, teachers and staff will be treated to a talk by Kelly where she will talk about her own sporting journey and achievements and just how important a part sport has played in her life.
Paul Teebay, Director of Specialism says of the visit “Having Dame Kelly come to King Edward VII School Sport Partnership to help celebrate our pupils sporting achievements is the perfect way to recognize the achievements of both those pupils and everyone involved in the PE department at the school.
Kelly has such a fantastic story to tell. From her early years, right up to today her story is one of motivation and dedication, and as well as helping to celebrate the achievements of the pupils involved in the presentation, her visit will also inspire all of our pupils to continue with their engagement in PE and activity, whatever their level of ability.”
Youth Sport Trust, Chief Executive, Steve Grainger commented on the visits. “Whether its tai chi or tennis, sport is so important to the lives of young people; teaching them many valuable skills from leadership to teamwork. These schools have already made great strides to help motivate their pupils to get more involved in all different kinds of sport and I’m sure Dame Kelly’s visit to the Norfolk will inspire them to continue to reap the benefits of PE and sport.”
National School Sport Champion, Dame Kelly Holmes explained the importance of the visits: “I’m excited about visiting Norfolk to inspire pupils of all ages and abilities to be the best they can be in sport whether that’s as volunteers, young leaders or participants. Sport has been an enormous part of my life so I’m very passionate about how children can get involved in all types of sporting activity.”
