Press Release

Double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes is set to inspire young people in Kent to do more PE and school sport when she visits pupils in the area on Tuesday 20 May.

In her role as the National School Sport Champion, a Government-backed role managed by the Youth Sport Trust and supported by Norwich Union, Dame Kelly has taken on the challenge of helping the Government give every child the chance of five hours of sport every week.

Kelly will be visiting Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy on Tuesday afternoon where pupils will get the chance to meet with her and demonstrate some of the activities, such as tag-rugby, trampolining and dance, on offer to them during their PE sessions. Kelly will also be invited to join in with their ‘Wake and Shake’ session to kick the visit off.

As part of the celebration, pupils will also be treated to a question and answer session where they will be able to talk to Kelly about her own sporting journey and achievements.

Dr Sidwell, CEO of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation, says: “Dame Kelly’s visit to Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy is fantastic reward for the hard work that is being put in by staff and pupils to get everyone active.

“As a sport specialist academy, we are committed to the concept of ‘sport for all’ and during the visit we hope to share with Dame Kelly the broad range of activities on offer to our pupils. Her own sporting life-story is one of inspiration and motivation and I have no doubt it will have a huge impact on the entire school.”

Youth Sport Trust Chief Executive, Steve Grainger, commented on the visit. “Sport is so important to the lives of young people; teaching them many valuable skills from leadership to teamwork. This school has already made great strides to help motivate its pupils to get more involved in all different kinds of sport and I’m sure Dame Kelly’s visit to Kent will inspire them to continue to reap the benefits of PE and sport.”

National School Sport Champion, Dame Kelly Holmes explained the importance of the visit: “I’m excited about visiting Kent to inspire pupils of all ages and abilities to be the best they can be in sport whether that’s as volunteers, young leaders or participants. Sport has been an enormous part of my life so I’m very passionate about how children can get involved in all types of sporting activity.”
