First National School Sport Champion road-show
11th – 12th June
As the National School Sport Champion I had my first road-show which saw me visit six schools in the North East and Yorkshire over two days.
An action packed two days saw my visit All Saints College-Newcastle, Farringdon Sports College – Sunderland and Longfield Sports College – Darlington before the road-show headed South to Oaklands Sports College -York, High Ridge School Specialist Sports College -Scunthorpe and Priesthorpe Sports College in Leeds.
All six schools demonstrated what they are doing to increase the provision of PE and school sport to all pupils. I watched (and joined in!) activities including athletics, rugby, Boccia and cycling. I spoke to young gifted and talented athletes about my athletics career and my own experiences of PE and school sport. Each school acted as host to their School Sport Partnership giving the opportunity to pupils from the wider community to be part of the day.
I really loved seeing the young sports leaders and ambassadors taking the lead on a lot of the activities it was great to see the interaction of the all the pupils and the staff.
During the two days I was able to speak to Head teachers, Heads of PE, PE Teachers, School Community Develop Managers, Director of Specialisms, local mayors and Partnerships development managers, which was fantastic for my role and gives me a greater understanding of the work being done in schools and some of the issues that are being faced.
I am now looking forward to my next road-show in the South East on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th June.
