National School Sport Week Day 4
Thursday 3rd July
Watch the video of my interview by students from Mayfield School:
Today I’m visiting 2 schools in the London area.
First Woodlands Infant School in Ilford
Then Hackney School Sport Partnership in Hackney
...And third visit of the day: N0 10 Downing Street
First visit of the day: Woodlands Infant School - their project is called ‘2012 Redbridge pupils say yes to PE & Sport’: young people in the borough are selected based on sporting criteria and are recognised for their talent, commitment and attitude to lifelong commitment to healthy living, physical education and sport.
A number of schools are involved in this project: Woodlands Infants, South Park Primary, Uphall Primary, Cleveland Primary, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary, Nightingale Primary, Gordons Infants, Snaresbrook Primary, St. Peter & Paul’s Primary, Aldersbrook Primary, Woodlands Junior, Loxford High School, Mayfield High School and Wanstead High School.

I arrived at the school at 10am and was welcomed by school representatives and sports leaders. The first event of the day was a giant balloon release with 500 pupils present on the field! This is a competition where the school whose balloon travels the furthest will win an after-school club funded for the whole of next year.

Then I took part in a photoshoot for the Partnership 2012 project with 30 pupils. A collage will be created from National School Sports Week of 2012 pupils aged 5-19 celebrating the upcoming Olympics in East London. It will be used in every school to create positive role models for PE & Sport, not just in their school but for the whole community. I think it’s a brilliant idea!

Then I was interviewed by three Mayfield School students who are doing a BBC School Report project (video of the interview at the top of the page), and finally I took part in the multi-skills festival activities with primary school kids. Again a great visit, I left the school at 12 for my 2nd visit to Hackney.

Second visit of the day: Hackney School Sport Partnership at Queensbridge Community Centre
They had loads of activities going on throughout the day including playground leaders activity , rugby coaching, multi-skills competition and resistance sliding. Pupils from Gayhurst, Cardinal Pole, Grasmere, St. John of Jerusalem and Girls Hackney Free where involved on the day’s events.

I arrived early afternoon, I met schools representatives and loads of pupils before going to the community hall for a Taekwondo session led by GB women’s champion Charlene, who came with me to Downing Street later.

Denise Lewis, Shaun Purcell and Jason Gardener where also in attendance at the community centre.
We all took part in a big warm down session, and it was time to get on way to Downing Street.
Visit No 10 Downing Street
The Prime Minister has been supportive of National School Sport Week since I came up with the idea last year. We formally announced that it would take place this year while we were at the Sports College Conference in February. I then officially launched it in May when I went back to see my own PE Teacher at my old school Hugh Christie in Tonbridge Kent.
So it was only right that I should pop into Downing Street to tell them what I a success The National School Sport Week had been.

After visiting Hackney we took 18 young people who showed a mixture of Tai Kwando and Multi Skills to the Prime Minister, Secretary of States Ed Balls and Andy Burnham in the garden.
Also helping out was Olympic Champion Denise Lewis and Olympic Silver Medallist Guin Battten and representatives from Youth Sport Trust. There were many more dignitaries in attendance and after a couple of interviews it was time to leave and finish of yet another successful day.
