Dame Kelly speaks at the Labour Party Conference

28th September 2009

Dame Kelly Holmes met up with old friends, Tessa Sanderson and Amir Khan this week, down in sunny Brighton for the Labour Party Conference.

Dame Kelly, was invited by the Labour Party to take part in an onstage discussion about sport and the upcoming Olympics in London. She was joined on stage with former Olympic gold medallist Tessa Sanderson, whom Dame Kelly has publically said was an inspiration in her life as a child growing up and wanting to compete at the Olympic Games, also Amir Khan who also reached the podium at the same summer Olympics as Dame Kelly in Athens 2004.

Dame Kelly kindly agreed to take part in a discussion session involving; Tessa Jowell (who was Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport during the 2012 bidding process) Tessa Sanderson, Amir Khan and promising young sports people from across the country. The discussion, focused predominantly on the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Dame Kelly said after the event, “it was really nice seeing Tessa and Amir again, Tessa inspired me so much as a child growing up, wanting to compete at the Olympics and hopefully we can do the same for the young athletes here today. Myself and Amir both had a fantastic time at Athens in 2004, our Olympic stories will hopefully inspire young people’s lives in and out of sport”
