Dame Kelly Holmes launches B&Q canvas design competition

10 June 2008

Brighten up the British Team’s athlete accommodation at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games!

Double Olympic gold medallist and Team B&Q ambassador Kelly Holmes joined pupils from Ellen Wilkinson School at the B&Q store in Beckton today to officially launch the B&Q canvas design competition, aimed at brightening up the British Team’s athlete accommodation at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

As an official partner of the British Olympic Association, B&Q the UK’s largest home improvement retailer will be kitting out Team GB’s accommodation in Beijing with additional home furnishings this summer. In a bid to further brighten up the walls of the accommodation and create an all important ‘home from home’ for our British athletes, B&Q is calling on members of the public to come up with some stylish designs that can be put onto canvas and displayed on the walls.

The winning canvases will be signed by a Team GB medallist whilst in Beijing and will be returned to their owners after the Olympic Games, along with some Team GB kit for the first and second placed entries. An overall winner will be chosen by the Team GB athletes in Beijing and this design will also receive a coaching session from one of B&Q’s very own squad of athletes, Team B&Q, for a school or community group.

The competition is open to all ages but is split into three categories; most imaginative use of the colours of the Olympic rings (blue, black, red, yellow and green); Reflections of the Olympic motto – Citius, Altius, Fortius (Higher, Faster, Stronger); most Inspirational Olympic Games moment.

Team B&Q Ambassador Dame Kelly Holmes said:

“The Olympic Games is an overwhelming event for any Olympic competitor. It is really important for an athlete to remain focused on their performance and goal so that they don’t get too blown away with the enormity and excitement of the Games, as this can have a huge impact on their results. One of the important things is that they try and treat it like any other competition that they have participated in and this is also where it is so important to create a ‘home from home’ in the athlete accommodation to create some normality. The home furnishings that are already provided by B&Q will make a huge difference and I think it will be great to be reminded that the British public is supporting the athletes by seeing their colourful designs around the walls of the accommodation.”

In addition to the canvases, B&Q will be providing numerous other products to the athlete village including: Union Jack bedroom lamps, up-lighters with energy efficient light bulbs, kettles, ironing boards, rugs, coffee tables, extension leads and travel adaptor plugs.

For information on how to enter the competition visit the Team B&Q website www.teambandq.com but hurry entries must be received by 12 noon on 7 July 2008.
