Last weekend I was able to get down on my local beach and walk along when the tide was out and make foot prints in the sand, from which I was able to measure my stride more accurately. Previously, I had entered 35 cm in my speaking Pedometer, which I had measured in doors. When I measured it on the beach it came up as 70 cm. I did it again and it worked out at just about 50 cm. It does say in the instructions to enter your average stride. So I think 50 cm is about average. Today I took 14.647 steps, which covered 7.32 Kilometers. That works out at 4.575 miles. Which is half a mile up on last week.

This week I was only going to add another half mile to my training to walk a marathon. I started from the same place and went the same route until I reached Jaywick sea front. This week I turned right, and walked along the front past Jaywick, up to St Osyths and then around the caravan site before rejoining the sea front. Then back the way I came and continued to Clacton then walked back home. I knew I had gone over the intended extra half mile, but when I checked my Pedometer I got a shock. I had taken 24,719 steps, which is 12.35 kilometers. That works out at 7.72 miles, at least a quater or a marathon. I had about 5 loo stops, 4 x 2 minutes stops to either take a drink or change my cd. It took me 4 hours 25 minutes. Now I'm nackered and a little sore. But also feeling pleased with myself.

An interval session this afternon, comprising 8 x 330 yds with 90 sec jog recoveries.

A 3 mile recovery run yesterday and an interval session today. Ran 5 x 1,200 metres with 90 sec jog recoveries.

Thanks Torz, I did another walk today. As I was trying out another route, which was north of Clacton pier, I didn't walk as far this week. Last week I walked 7.72 miles. This week I took 20,360 steps and covered 10.18 kilometers. That's 6.36 miles. I would have been proud of that last week. Its all going in the right direction. As from next week, because of a number social activities coming up. I will be doing my walking on a Monday instead of Thursday.
  5.
    Thanks Torz.

Well done Steve for persevering with your training. I'm sure that you must be feeling better in yourself.

Sadly not hill strider. I'm feeling proud of myself for doing what I'm doing, but I'm far from being fit. There's 2 main grey area's. Firstly my weight. I started off at over 13 and a half stone. I've managed to get that down to 13 stone, but its been like that for 3 weeks. So a more drastic approach to my weight is needed. The less I carry around with me, the better it will be. The second and main cause for worry is my right leg. My left leg is no problem, but the front of my right thigh burns like crazy after a few miles and I've started getting pains in my right calf muscle. Poor old thing. I think that if I can get my weight down, it would put less strain on my right leg. I'm going to invest in some leg supports like your given in hospital. But I think the weight is the main problem. But no pain no gain.
  6.
Well done for persevering Steve. Your weight will eventually come down, as long as you burn off more calories than you take in.

A blistering hot day yesterday and I ran 11.5 miles in the forest.

I decided to do my walk on Thursday as usual this week. Today I needed to find something to put on my right thigh to ease the burning pain I was getting. I found some cream called 'Muscle Rub' being sold in Superdrug. Although its green in colour, it smells like 'Whitehorse Oils' and has the same affect. I gave it a half mile (twenty minutes) trial today and it seem to do the trick. I'm also going to seek medical advice shorlty.

A bit cooler today. Ran a steady 6 miles this afternoon.

Today I walked from my home in Great Clacton to Walton on Naze pier via Holland on sea and Frinton. I had 2 short 10 minute breaks to take on liquid and a energy bar. The second of those breaks was on Walton pier. I started with a small back injury that was begining to cause me grief, so I decided that because of the injury, to walk back to Frinton station and finish my walk there. Today I took 21.528 steps and covered 10.76 kilometers, which is 6.73 miles. Next week providing I'm injury free, I'm hoping to do the same route, but continue walking back to my home. Now, I'm planning to rest up.
  10.
Well done Steve for persevering, despite your injuries. A rest is a good idea.

Today I did a very easy pace 5.5 mile run.

As part of my marathon walking training, today the 2nd of June I took 26,105 steps and covered 13.05 kilometers, which is 8.16 miles. Although it took me under 3 hours to get to my intended destination of Walton on Naze pier, it took me an extra 2 hours (5) to make the return journey as I became ill and had to rest up before continueing to walk. But it wasn't my legs that were the problem, I developed an upset stumock that made me feel bad. I think I know the problem and will try again next week.
  11.
Keep it up Steve, you will get there in the end.

Today, I did my marathon walking training. I took 27,213 steps and covered 13.60 kilometers, which is 8.50 miles. Although it took me 5 hours 40 minutes to complete that distance, you have to nock off about 45 minutes for comfort breaks, taking on drinks and changing my cd's. I also allow myself about 4 x 10 minute rest periods. The object of the exercise is to do the milage, so times are not that important. Everything seems to be going according to plan and I'm hoping to do 9 miles next week.

Sadly I will have to temporally cut my long distance walking back for a while due to an ongoing injury that needs to be sorted. For the past 20 years or more I've been getting a burning sensation at the top of my right leg when ever I stand for too long in one place. Doing my long walks has aggrivated the problem so much so to the extent that my leg is starting to burn when I'm walking.

I was a mile and half into my walk today and I thought my leg was on fire and I had to stop. After a 5 minute sit down on some grass, I managed to get into Jaywick where I was able to get the bus home. I already had a doctors appointment for next week to seek advice. But in talking with my sister recently and discribing my problem, it appears that she had the same problem up to 5 years ago. It was diagnosed as 'Meralgia Parasthetica', which in English is a trapped nerve. My sister had to have an operation to clear the problem and hasn't had a problem since.

So if the doctor agrees its the same problem, it will depend on how long I have to wait to get it sorted. So I will need to cut my long walks down for a while. But today I did manage 8,741 steps and covered 4.37 kilometers, which is 2.37 miles. If my leg can get sorted within the next year, I'm hoping to continue my marathon walking training when I recover. But at the moment I'm feeling a bit down about it, So I'm off to Bournemouth till Monday. Catch up with you all then.
  14.
Sorry to hear of your injury problems Steve. Hope you can get the leg sorted out, so you can get back into full training again. Enjoy your break!

I went to the doctors today to get my leg problem sorted. I've had the basic problem with my leg for at least 15 years and its only been agrivated by my long walks. The doctor who I've only met once before didn't have a clue and said it could be the statin's I've been taking for just five years, which is for my cholestrol. He has arranged for me to have a blood test to see if is the statins. He said that if it is the statins, there's not much he can do. I went along with him, but I think I will need to get a second opinion.:sad:

Doctors' today don't seem to have much of an idea, I'm afraid. I think a second opinion would be a good idea.

Today has been very very hot and I ran an easy pace 4 miles. The forecast for Sunday is 30 deg which means my Sunday 10k race will be very slow.:cry:

Just an update regarding my right leg. I've been able to see another doctor at the same surgary who agreed it could be a entrapped nerve. His given me a mild pain killer and sent me for an xray, which I've had today the 7th. I've made an appointment to go back to the doctors next Friday. The doctor said that depending on what the xray tells him, I might need to see a specialist. At least something positive is being done. The doctor also said that it could take a few months to finally get it sorted so that I can continue my walking. I don't mind, at least its being sorted.
  17.
Good to see that things are moving at last Steve! It must be frustrating for you to have to curtail your walking for a few months.

There's been a set back regarding my leg. The xray showed no trapped nerve and the doctor is unsure to the cause of the problem. His now trying me out on different pills and possions, but I'm not sure if he knows what his doing. I will be seeking some other advice soon. I will keep you updated.

Oh dear! I think its better you get a second opinion!
Hope they get it diagnoised soon!

  18.
I agree that a second opinion is a good idea. Pills and potions don't seem to be the solution.
  19.

Unless the cause is known, it can't be treated. Doctor's are only human, I wouldn't expect them to know everything. But, the doctor's not doing his job properly if he doesn't send you to a specialist for another opinion.

I've been speaking to my sister tonight who is now 73. She had been in the medical profession all her life from student nurse to matron then to a health visiter before having to take early retirement due to back problems caused by lifting people in and out of beds through out her carree. About 8 years ago my sister developed exactly the same problem that I now have. It took 5 years of being sent from one doctor to another and from one specialist to another before finally seeing a Neologist who realised what it was the first time she met him. Trapped nerve that needed surgary. My sister has been ok now for 5 years apart from a little soreness from where she was operated on. So I know what it is, its just a case of guiding the doctor in the right direction without upsetting him. I will get there in the end.
  20.
Sounds hopeful Steve! Diplomatically ask your Dr. to refer you to a Neo Surgeon.

Back problems are an occupational hazard for those in the caring profession. My sister is a nurse and she has back problems.
  21.

Got thoroughly soaked yesterday in the rain when training. It's rained all day today, and this evening's race has been postponed till next week - a multi terrain 5 miler with five hills, first time it's been run.

  22.
We were lucky in the south, as we missed the rain. Your multi terrain race sounds good MNF, let us know how you get on.

Today was hot and windy and I ran a steady 6 miles on trails in the forest.

i had a pretty bad session tonight!
i go back from egypt last night and go away for a lacrosse course thing tomorrow so thought id go along for a hurdles session tonight as im doing them at the AAA's in bedford on the 22nd august,.,
i wasnt completely happy with my hurdling and so i said to myself just do one run and get it right.. i ran and hit the first hurdle but carried on, hit the second really hard with my trail leg and flew... i landed literally 4m after the hurdle and rolled and hit my head on the 3rd hurdle! i had left marks on the track where i fell as well! lol so now i was even more annoyed and got back up and just did it again, only to smack the second hurdle again and nearly fell again! so all in all not a great session tonight!
