Sept - Oct 2009 update

10th October

I was in Birmingham for my ‘On Camp with Kelly Eat for Success’ get together. Ainsley Harriot joined us for a special cookery day, demonstrating to 42 of my young athletes how to cook simple nutritious meals to help them fuel their bodies properly for better performances.

6th October

I presented some of my OCWK athletes and coaches with well deserved achievement awards. This was a proud moment for me, as it shows the success of the athletes who are part of the initiative. I am also pleased to recognise the hard work of their coaches who give up their own personal time to help the athletes be the best they can be.

5th October

I attended the Pride of Britain Awards which celebrates the bravery of a wide range of people. I always find it very humbling to be there on the night. I was a judge on the panel for the second time.

2nd October

Launch of the new ‘We are England’ brand

The launch of the new brand also marked the start of the one year count down to 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. I attended in my official capacity of President of Commonwealth Games England and was joined in Trafalgar square by Mark Foster and lawrence dallaglio amongst others to reveal the new brand.

1st October

Launch of the Kent School Games 2010

I was joined by hundreds of children to launch the Kent School Games 2010 at Hayesbrook Sports College, Tonbridge.

I also visited the schools at Somerhill, Tonbridge, to open a new swimming pool and dining hall. The event marked the end of DKH Legacy Trust 24 hour ‘Swimathon’ held at the school. It was a huge hit with the children! This new swimming pool is fantastic, these young people have got amazing sports facilities and this addition just makes it even more impressive”

I received a poem from one young pupil … it is such a beautiful, well written poem, it really touched me, so I wanted to share it with you all:

The poem is titled ‘My Heroine is Kelly Holmes’:

Bang! goes the gun
You begin to run
Sprinting as fast as you can
Giving it your all
Feeling on the ball
Don’t disappoint your fans
You’re all out of breath
Feeling close to death
This is a once in a lifetime chance
Don’t give up now
The rules don’t allow
Run whatever the circumstance

28th September

I was joined by Amir Khan to address the Labour Party Conference and take part in an onstage discussion about sport and the upcoming Olympics in London.

18th September

I was awarded an Honorary Degree from the Open University at the Barbican Centre in London. I attended the graduation ceremony alongside more than 200 students of varying ages, all of whom had achieved either MA or BA status. I felt humbled to accept my degree in the presence of so many who had worked hard to achieve their degrees whilst working or undertaking other duties

17th September

‘Celebrate Young Talent’

I was invited by the Prime Minister to join the round table discussion in No.10 with dance group Diversity and 11 young people who have participated in Talent & Enterprises Taskforce projects. I’m a big supporter of young people and meeting the kids present on that day proved to me once more that there’s a lot of talent to be discovered and developed. I am delighted to be able to help some of them through my charity DKH Legacy Trust.

2nd September

I attended BUCS (British Universities Colleges Sport) Annual conference:

The conference audience was made up of 300 delegates all from university sport, including directors of sport, elected student officers (AU Presidents), sports staff and sports development staff.

My speech covered quite a range of topics including my Olympic experiences and how I use them to mentor others. The ‘On Camp with Kelly’ programme and evidence of results, my thoughts on 2012 and the legacy of sports, how university sport can make a difference to student athletes and be a valuable part of the support package… and more.

I will try to come back on here asap to give you more details and more updates!

Love, Kelly
