October 2008 update

Hello everyone,

Here’s a catch up on what I have been up to over the past month…

Friday 31st October

I held my first DKH Legacy Trust event: Backing Talent – supported by BT.
This was the induction of my new learning programme designed to help young talented athletes from a wide range of sports understand what it takes to be a world class performer. I was helped on the day by two DKH Legacy Trust ‘Harnessing Talent’ athletes, Craig Heap and Alan Rapley, and also some of my ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes who are now becoming role models to younger talents.

The day took place at Cumberland School in East London and was well attended by local 13-20 year old selected athletes from the area, later joined by their coaches and families. Photo below by Louise Roberts

Wednesday 22 October

I was invited by the British Mountaineering Council for a day of rock climbing in the Peak District National Park. The BMC contacted me after they heard that I was looking to take on new sporting challenges. I met with the BMC’s guidebook editor Niall Grimes who has over 20 years of climbing experience, and was instructed by international Mountain Guide Rich Cross. We did two 20 meter high climbs in the morning, and I was later introduced to a type of climbing called bouldering – climbing on smaller rocks without rope – by a group of young talented climbers.

It was really cold at times especially when reaching the top but I thoroughly enjoyed the day and the sport!

Thursday 16 October

I joined Sue Barker on stage for a quick interview at the end of the Olympic Parade on Trafalgar Square. It was great to see so many people had turned up to support our successful GB team, and it gave us all a feel of what’s coming for London 2012… Bring it on!

Tuesday 7th October

I attended the Inspiration Awards for Women – in association with Breakthrough Breast Cancer. I was nominated for the Aspirational Celebrity Award…. and I won!

The Inspiration Awards is a celebration of women from diverse backgrounds who have inspired a nation, and the Aspiration Award that I won celebrates determination and desire to achieve success and inspiring others to do so. See below my photo with Dame Helen Mirren who was there to receive her Awards.

Earlier that day I attended the The Daily Telegraph and Norwich Union School Sport Matters Awards Ceremony at Twickenham Stadium. I was proud to hand out six well deserved ‘On Camp with Kelly’ achievement awards to athletes and their coaches.

I also presented Young Ambassador Debbie Foote with ‘The National School Sport Week Recognition Award’. She won the award for her outstanding contribution to the National School Sport Week – I had met her in July at the South West Lincolnshire School Sport Partnership and and it was great to meet her again and hand out her well deserved Award.

Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th October

I held the first ever ‘On Camp with Kelly’ Coach Development Weekend at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Friday 3rd October

I opened the new centre for Sports Performance and Wellbeing at Leeds Metropolitan University. In the run-up to the Athens Olympics, I worked in Leeds with my physio Alison Rose and a team of sports scientists to get into peak condition, and when I got my gold medals I felt they where a part of my success.

The new centre now allows sports people of all abilities to access world class professionals and facilities, to maximise their potential and to enable them to train and compete to the best of their ability.

I’ll be back soon with more updates…
