October-November update

21st November

This week is anti -bullying week

I am very passionate about this issue and I am a patron of charity Beat bullying.
I am pleased to see that some of my forum members are speaking out about bullying issues as the only way it can start to be eradicated is by bringing the issue to light and not hiding it!

I believe people who bully are desperate for attention, have no discipline, no self worth or respect. Bullying is something that we should all stand against and it is important that we all talk about it to put an end to it.

I am participating in the Anti-Bullying Week up to 23rd November because I feel that bringing bullying matters to everybody’s attention as often as possible will help beat the bullies in the end.
Here’s a couple of websites with information and anti-bullying activities ideas:

15th November

This morning I have been talking on BBC Breakfast Live TV and Radio 5 Live about womens sporting issues.
This afternoon I spoke at the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation Conference at the Emirates Stadium after research showed some worrying statistics on women’s involvement in sport:
-More than 80% of women are not doing enough exercise to benefit their health
-Among 16-24 year olds, women are half as active as men
-The situation is worst for low income
I wrote an article on the matter that will give you more info and tell you about my involvement in helping to improve the situation – published in the Sun newspaper today.

At 8am this morning I was at Harris Girls Academy with the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Ed Balls the secretary of state Children Schools and Families. This was to announce that the results of the school sport survey and again there has been a great increase of the number of people taking part in school sport. It was also to high light the need for more females to take up sport which is of interest to me and why I started Girls Active. It is a fantastic Academy and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone there.

On Camp with Kelly Get Together Weekend

I had 23 athletes and 14 coaches met up at the University of Bath on 13-14 October for the second of the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ Get-Together Weekends in 2007. The weekend was based at the University’s Sports Training Village which is also the site of a UK Athletics High Performance Centre.

The theme of the Get-Together Weekend was athlete and coach development and learning about the importance of injury prevention and rehabilitation techniques, something that I found out a lot about during my career. It has been an excellent year for many of the ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athletes but is important that they learn how to cope when illness or injury strikes. I hope that athletes and coaches learnt a lot from the weekend which they can incorporate into their training.

Girls Active in Cumbria

The third roadshow took place in penrith Cumbria It was a great day and I have To say all the girls were good because they really gave it a go! The most powerful thing however was that four girls from the Airville School Sport Partnership came to tell the stories of their experiences from last year’s GirlsActive.
All the girls took part in street dance, combat fitness, rock climbing and absailing, high ropes, leap of faith (jump of a high platform) and leadership tasks.
