March-April update

Hello everybody!

I’m finally back on here for an update after a very busy few weeks…

April

28 ApriI

IoD Convention

I addressed the audience about the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi and spoke personally to business leaders about the role they could play in England’s participation in Delhi: by becoming an ‘Official Friend’ of the team, they can really get behind the England team. The Games will be a key piece of preparation for London 2012, especially for many of the young emerging athletes for whom this will be the first chance to sample the unique multi-sport games experience.

Corus Kids of Steel

I was in the London Borough of Newham to start the ‘Corus Kids of Steel’ day. The Corus Kids of Steel Triathlon seriesis is in its fourth year, and has introduced over 10,000 children to the sport of triathlon, at schools around the country. The event is a great opportunity to experience sport in the community. As the host borough for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, this event is one of a number of activities that the London Borough of Newham is involved in.

12-25 April

I celebrated my 39 plus 1 birthday. I’ve have not come to terms my age, and it was nice to get away and hide! Seven of my friends had organised a surprise holiday to Spain, but that got cancelled because of the problems caused by the volcanic ash and instead we went to Cornwall for a couple of weeks which was really nice.

10 April

I filmed the Carlsberg Team Talk Ad. The 90 second TV ad features Stuart Pearce, Trevor Brooking, Jack Charlton, Steve Redgrave, Ellen MacArthur, Nigel Benn, Phil The Power Taylor, Carl Fogarty, Clive Woodward, Ranulph Fiennes, Jeff Stelling, Kasabian, Soccer AM Tubes, Soccer AM Rocket, Ian Botham and me!

25-29 March

Dubai

I attended the Dubai World Cup Weekend and Networking event with my charity’s CEO, Julie Whelan. The event gathered some of the world’s most influential people, there to network and develop new business ideas.

19-21 March

BBC Sport Relief

I appeared on BBC1 during the live coverage of the big Sport Relief night to kick start the show with Alan Shearer before heading off the Cape Town in South Africa for the first ever Sport Relief Mile!

My trip was truly worthwhile as a lot of people turned up to do their bit in support for the event! On the 21st March I presented the live coverage of the Cape Town Sport Relief night with Alan Shearer and Tammy Anne Fortune!

During the weekend I visited projects and organizations that are supported by Sport Relief.

Laureus Sport for Good foundation

The foundation was started in 2000 to celebrate the universal power of sport to bring people together as a force for good and use the passion that sport inspires to effect social change across the globe.

During my short stay in South African I took time to visit one of their projects with Morne Du Plessis (big SA Rugby star and manager of 1995 springboks who won world cup). It was fantastic to talk to the kids there and see how they where able to improve their lives and set themselves goals with the help of the foundation.

8-11 March

Laureus Sports Awards, Abu Dhabi

I attended the ceremony – The Laureus World Sports Awards celebrates sporting excellence – attending the awards ceremony always brings back good memories as I received the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year in 2005.

I had fun on the race track at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi courtesy of the Laureus Driving experience!

5 March

Canterbury Christchurch University

I opened the Sport Centre which has been designated a pre-Olympic training facility for London 2012 for basketball , badminton and racing.

4th March

Jaguar Academy of Sport

I attended the launch as a patron of the Academy, along with Sir Ian Botham, Gareth Edwards CBE, Denise Lewis OBE, Sir Steve Redgrave and David Beckham OBE.

It’s Jaguar’s first major foray into UK Sport – the academy has the primary aim of recognising and supporting new British sporting talent through the provision of a Bursary Fund.

The Jaguar Academy will support new talent and hold an annual Awards ceremony to recognise their successes.

All sports will be considered for the Fund and the beneficiaries will be those who demonstrate the greatest potential, real dedication to their sport and an outstanding desire to succeed.
