Diary

June update

18 June 2007
Hi everyone,

After hearing comments about the 2012 logo I wanted to write my real thoughts…. Obviously this has not met with the approval of a lot of people, the main thing it has done, is to cause a massive debate and that is what they wanted. It will be easily recognisable and by 2012 I am sure it will meet the approval of the next generation when graphics come more to the forefront of design in the future.

I agree that most people were expecting it to really depict London in all it glory, but the fact is it is a 2012 games for everyone not just for London. The city happens to be the hosts. If you look back to all the other logos they do not all depict that country and in some countries they also caused debate. However when the games come round, it becomes a symbol associated with sporting achievement at the biggest sporting show case on earth.

I am sorry a lot of you do not like it but maybe when you start to see the feel associated with the logo and the way it will be used of the next 5 years, maybe just maybe it will grow on you!

Let’s face it, it’s just a logo….

Look below on this page for images of the logo and info about the launch and the brand

Launch at University of Birmingham on 14th June

I was in Birmingham last night to perform the official opening of The University of Birmingham’s School of Sport and Exercise Sciences.

I unveilled the new building (£16.4 million home), which is the largest purpose built sport and exercise-science facility in the UK, containing state-of-the art facilities for teaching and research.

The school is one of the leading UK centres for research in performance sport, exercise physiology and sports psychology and was awarded the maximum 6* rating at the last Research Assessment Exercise. Current projects include research tackling psychological barriers to exercise, optimising nutrition and training interventions to improve performance of athletes, the chemical processes that influence diabetes and obesity, and studies of the links between stress and our immune systems.

Launch of the new London 2012 brand

I joined Lord Seb Coe Monday 4th June at the Roundhouse in London for the official launch of the new London 2012 brand.

The new Olympic emblem is based on the number 2012 – the year the Games take place – and includes the Olympic Rings and the word London. It is the symbol of the 2012 Games that will be recognisable to the rest of the world. It is Modern, vibrant, and about the youth. It is a dynamic image that will be evolving in the years between now and 2012.

For the first time the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games emblems have been based on the same core shape. It symbolises the Olympic spirit and the ability of the Games to inspire people to take part – not just as spectators, but as volunteers, in the Cultural Olympiad and more.
