Diary

June-July 09 update

Hello!

Here’s some highlights of my activities for June and July…

July 2009

Wednesday 29th

Journalist Alan Hubbard came to my London offices to interview me for the Independent on Sunday, covering some of my journey since my double gold win in Athens, my new role as president of the Commonwealth Games England, my hopes for British athletics, my work with talented young athletes and disadvantaged young people, and more…

Monday 27th

I was at the Olympic park site for the 3 year ‘count down’ to London 2012. The stadium is shaping up beautifully and building work all round the park is well on its way and on target. I appeared live on ITV news for an interview with Alistair Stewart and Katie Derham, talking about my hopes for the forthcoming games and beyond. The London games will be an incredible platform for our athletes and a moral boost for everybody in the country. I’m a great believer that sport has a positive influence on people lives at all levels which is why I have setup my own charity DKH Legacy trust to support talented young sports performers and also to help disadvantaged young people to find and fulfil their potential in life.

Monday 20th

I was at Brunel University in West London to receive my honorary degree of DUniv (Doctor of the University) from the Chancellor, Lord Wakeham. Kelly Sotherton (next to me on the pic below), who is a former Brunel student was also there on the day receiving an honorary degree. Two of my OCWK athletes, Tara Bird and Emma Pallant, are currently studying at the university.

Monday 13th – Friday 17th

I went on a five-day ‘Rock Improver’ course at Plas y Brenin, the National Mountain Centre in Wales. I discovered rock climbing when I was in the army and I love the sport so I decided to step up my game by going on this specialist course. I had a fantastic week, I learnt a lot and met some great people.

Thursday 9th

My runners club ‘Kelly’s Charity Runners’ has launched! It’s a fundraising initiative for my charity DKH Legacy Trust, calling all runners to become a member and help us help young people. You don’t have to be an athlete to be part of it, just someone who enjoys running and want to take up the opportunity to put their efforts to good use. If you register there’s some benefits in it for you too!

Interested? Then click here for more info and contact details. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch with my team they will be happy to help!

I attended the Beyond Sport Summit, a three-day event designed to celebrate, promote and drive forward sport-led social change. The Summit, chaired by Tony Blair, brought together people from the world of business, government and federations whose attitudes and decisions can influence social changes.
I presented two awards: Best Project by a Sport Federation or Governing Body and Best Corporate Social Responsibility in Sport.

I am an ambassador for Beyond Sport, which seeks to celebrate and support any individual or group, from the grassroots to the global, with the goal to drive positive change through sport.

Monday 6th

I went to Bressanone, Italy, as an IAAF ambassador for the 2009 IAAF Masterclass – an initiative to inspire talented kids just before the kick off of the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships. It was a great day where I lead some of the kids activities and did a motivational speech.

Friday 3 July

The Hop Farm, Kent

I launched a new sports campaign ‘Every Day Is Sports Day’ at The Hop Farm Family Park in Paddock Wood, Kent. I feel that it’s really important to bring back the competitive edge on all levels of sports activities and that’s what will be on offer for children at the Hop Farm, as they will be able to take part in a range of classic fun games like egg and spoon races, sack races and more from 1st – 31st August.

June

Saturday 13th

I went to Brands Hatch Fun Cup racing on Saturday to support the Nightingale Team who were racing for my charity DKH Legacy trust. This was the Nightingale Team’s first season participating in the Fun Cup Endurance Race series, where they came a very respectable Bronze position in the ‘Petrol Class’.

Thursday 4th

I attended the Sports and Technology 09 Conference Sponsored by BT Media & Broadcast. The event encourages network opportunities to discuss innovation of technologies in the market place and how these advancements are helping the sports sector.
