Jan-Feb 2009 update
Hello everybody!
Here’s a catchup on what I’ve been up to lately…
26 February
I attended The SkillsActive celebratory event for apprentices on the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme held in National Apprenticeship Week.
I hosted 3 workshops focussing on Communications and Lifestyle, and I participated to a Q&As session with Gabby Logan, Louise Davis (ex pro golfer), Mike Stanley (pro rugby player) and Louise Watkin (2008 Paralympic Swimmer)
The event was also attended by Minister of Sport Gerry Sutcliffe, John Denham (parliamentary under secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills) and Lord Young (Minister for Apprenticeships).

Sainsbury’s TOP Activity Awards ceremony
The Sainsbury’s TOP Activity Awards have been designed to recognise and celebrate the innovative work that School Sport Partnerships in England, Local Authorities / Partnerships in Scotland and Northern Ireland and their Sainsbury’s TOP Activity clubs have achieved as part of the programme.
I presented awards and gave a speech about the importance of physical activity, how sport can help achieve your goals and how well everyone in attendance at the awards has done to be here.
Sainsbury’s Top Activity programme has made a significant difference to a large number of young people and local communities. Since it’s launch over 1 million young people have participated in Sainsbury’s Top Activity and 2300 people have been trained to deliver the programme.
23 February
I attended the Jasper Conran Fashion Show at the London Fashion week, loved his Autumn / Winter collection.
DKH had the pleasure of meeting with Jasper Conran to congratulate him.
18th February
I’m delighted to announce the launch of my DKH Legacy Trust website!
Click here to visit dkhlegacytrust.org and find out about my new Trust’s development so far.
14th February
I was on Sky 1’s Noel’s HQ to surprise a boy called Alex Holmes who is doing great work with a project called Heads High talking about Bullying, an issue that I feel strongly about. I have been an anti bullying campaigner for some time and I do my best to raise the issue whenever possible. Alex was given a logo and memorabilia for his project and will be getting a website built for him as well.
9th February
I joined London Mayor Boris Johnson as he awarded £1,000 grants to 30 youngsters who hope to compete at London 2012. SportsAid can play a massive part in helping young talented athletes on their journey to achieving their goals and they couldn’t do it without support from partners like the Mayor.

30th January
The last of the Norwich Union Girls Active visits for January was in South Durham Gymnastics clubs home at Spennymore Leisure Centre Durham. The Lead Staff were Diane Snowsill PDM – Sedgefield SSP and Sarah Hepples who did a fantastic job in organising another big girls active induction day. There were well over 100 girls who I hope will become ambassadors and Girls Active leaders in the future. They were given different activities that included an indoor assault course in the PINK gym (and i really mean pink) football skills with a couple of England woman players and leadership tasks. At the end there was a planning session that will help the girls and their teachers paln what changes they would like in their school.
29th January
I continued with my Girls Active regional centre visits, Today was at Bewerley Park Centre for Outdoor Education in Harrogate.
The Lead Staff member was Rebecca Walters PDM – Craven SSP who is such a fantastic leader for us, so enthusiastic with everything she is given. Also the head of one of the schools was great
It was a really cold day but the girls did fantastic. It was outdoor tasks in which there were loads of activities to test your team work, listening, communication and leadership skills. I gave some of the activities a go which was great fun.
In the afternoon the girls did a really in depth planning session which was probably where Girls Active is able to grow as we create more and more Girls Active leaders and I am so pleased to see the girls be enthusiastic.

Dreams Come True Prize Winners Day in Tonbridge
Dreams Come True charity had organised an auction lunch, and the 8 winners joined me at the Tonbridge School Centre for a day of fun and fitness!
The day commenced with a long training session in which everyone worked so hard. I gave them a interval session which was a bit of a shock to the system! We did a stretching session and then after lunch went down in the sports hall to do so fun activities incorporating drills and circuit training activities. There was a lovely atmosphere and the day ended with a photo call with me and the participants.

Celebrating 40th Years of Centrepoint
I attended a reception hosted by Sarah Brown at Downing Street to celebrate the success of the work of Centrepoint, which will celebrate their 40th anniversary this year.
Centrepoint’s award-winning support and development approach not only find safe places for homeless people, but also help with their personal, social, learning and work needs.
23rd January
I appeared on the One Show to talk about what the National Anthem means to me. I talked about how proud I was to stand on the rostrum at the Athens Olympic Games, seeing the British Flag flying and hearing the National Anthem. It makes me proud to be British.
I will come back with more updates as soon as I get the chance!
Kelly
