Diary

28th August - 4th Anniversary of my Athens Victories

Today brings back memories for so many reasons. On the 28th August 2004 I won my 2nd Gold medal in the 1500m. It was an amazing day and a dream come true to win an event that I had been dreaming of for 20 years.
After winning my first Gold on the 23rd August, the 800m I never would have imagined where my journey would take me and three more races in four days was tough. The heats of the 1500m started the morning of the 24th, that was probably the hardest race of all because I had not slept that well (no surprises there) after such an emotional night. I was even in the ice bath at 2am trying to relax my legs and get them ready for the task ahead.

Athens for me was one of the best experiences of my life, I will never forget it and I even wonder if I will ever replicate the same feeling again – probably not – but at least I have experienced what it s like to achieve your dream and live to tell the story.

This year’s Olympics in Beijing was astonishing from a British Point of view: 47 medals and 19 Golds, more than we could ever have expected.
There were of course some highlights of the games with Chris Hoy winning three Golds in Cycling, Rebecca Addlington winning Double Gold in Swimming and Bradley Wiggins winning Double Gold in Cycling. But what I was most impressed with were the women’s performances this time round with some great champions like Nicole Cooke, Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb, Pippa Wilson, Rebecca Romero, Christine Ohuruogu, Victoria Pendleton to name but a few along with many other great performances.
Congratulations to the whole of Team GB. London 2012 is now our games and over the next four years sport will become the focal point for this country.

Today is also touched with sadness as it is the 2nd Anniversary of my Coach Dave Arnold passing away. I will never forget the time, energy, commitment and enthusiasm he gave to me and so many other athletes during his many years as a coach. Dave helped me win eight of my twelve medals as an athlete and I will never forget all that he did for me over the many years we were together.

I send his wife Carol and Daughter Sharon, son and grandchildren my love and best wishes Always xx

So now as another games are over and time moves on it is time for me to continue to grow and build on the work I have been doing over the past four years. I am starting new ventures like the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust dkhlegacytrust.org and taking up new opportunities which I hope I can make very successful. Watch this space!!

Thanks to everyone who has been loyal in visiting my website regularly, I will keep up with my updates consistently so you can continue to enjoy it.

Love Kelly xx
