Hello!

Click here to read my interview in the Times (2nd July) where I talk about my new aims!

It’s been another busy few weeks for me… I have done my best to round-up some of my main activities and events on this latest update and I hope that you enjoy reading!

Today 5th July I received an honorary degree at Queens University in Belfast!

Saturday 26th June

Launch of the Kent School Games

I am proud to be an ambassador for the Kent School Games. Organised by Kent County Council, the Games have given young people, aged four to 16 the opportunity to compete in 38 different sports, including disability sports.

I had expressed the idea of Kent School Games to be used as a model for a more ambitious National event, the School Olympics. I am delighted to say that the government has announced plans to replace UK School Games by the National School Olympics to help provide a long-term legacy from London 2012.

Times Educational Supplement (TES) Awards

DKH Legacy Trust was the official charity partner of the second annual TES Schools Awards, and I attended the ceremony at Grovesnor House Hotel with DKHLT CEO Julie Whelan. The awards celebrate and reward the professionalism and flair of those teams making an outstanding contribution to primary and secondary schools in both the maintained and independent sectors. They are open to all schools in every part of the UK. I presented Andy Byrnea, South Lanarkshire PE teacher, with the top honour for a lifetime’s achievement in the first UK-wide TES Schools Awards.

‘Indian Summer’ Gala Dinner

The event was organised to help raise funds to support the 2010 England Team at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October.

As president of Commonwealth Games England, I support all fundraising opportunities that will help meeting the costs of sending our team to the games in the best condition possible. The evening was a great success with Jonathan Edwards & Karen Pickering doing a great job as hosts. Comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli and Singer Songwriter Gabriella Cilmi gave great performances, and I was joined on stage by by Zoe Smith, who’s hoping to win Gold at London 2012 as she can lift the weight of an average man above her head!
